St Gregory the Great Kirknewton Northumberland
Location
Kirknewton, Northumberland, NE71 6XF
There has been a church on this site since at least the 11th century. The church was restored by John Dobson in 1860, retaining the 15th century chancel and south transept. A notable feature of the church is the 12th century stone relief of the Adoration of the Magi, which is set into the wall near the chancel arch. In the churchyard is the grave of the social reformer Josephine Butler (1828-1906) and the war graves of young airmen who died flying out of the Milfield airbase during the Second World War. The Evetts window (1977-78) is the East window in the North aisle and depicts the theme of Thanksgiving and Harvest. The church is generally open.
