St Nicholas Cathedral Newcastle upon Tyne Tyne and Wear

Location

Cathedral House
42/44 Mosley Street
Newcastle upon Tyne
NE1 1DF

The Ascension window in the East End of the Cathedral depicts the shape of a Communion chalice at the centre of which is the figure of Christ rising up from his disciples. He is surrounded by angels and old testament prophets. The Greek letters of Alpha and Omega represent the beginning and the end. Underneath we can see a pelican with her young. This image references the pelican pecking her breast to feed her young, which in Christian symbolism recalls the sacrifice made by Jesus so that others may live.
The North window in the Chapel of the Resurrection is from 1958-59.
The main feature of the design is a cross surmounting the world, here symbolized as a circle extending over all four lights. Symbols of Our Lord's Passion are disposed over the area of the window. This window replaces one by William Wailes severely damaged during the Second World War.
